Emo culture

First to say that I hate word ‘emo’. Don’t have some special reason, because I can say for myself that I’m emotional person, but I just don’t like this word. It’s just too fake. For example, I know one girl, who one day said me: “I’m from now on in emo mood”. This sounds for me that she WANT to be emotional, but you can’t be this by just wanting, it’s just like that. But everyone is emotional, emotions make us humans. But someone hide this (there are a lot of reasons) and someone don’t have problems to show what they feel. This second persons are so called ‘emos’.

Tokio Hotel - emo bandOther reason why I hate this word is one German band. Sounds stupid, but when someone says ‘emo’ first thing that come on my mind is “Tokio Hotel” and their emo-gay-girly-weird outfit and look :-P … For me this is freaky and disgusting. I never listened to their music and when I saw them, I even don’t want to.

Than I found this at urbandictionary.com, explanation of word ‘emo’:

“An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:

1. Girls say they like “sensitive guys” (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how “nobody understands”.
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too much of a pussy. His penis is too small, he’s too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn’t even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying “It’s not you, it’s me.” (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.

This is the sad truth of the emo lifestyle/music, and now that I look at how pathetic it really is, maybe the emos DO have something to cry about!

When she sees how sensitive and emo I have become, she’ll definately go out with me!”

Whole this explanation is wrong and I hate ‘emo’ word even more. But I agree with second thing, but only about dressing. This doesn’t mean that all emos are dressed like this, but I don’t like that kind of dressing, as I already said when i wrote about “Tokio Hotel”. Forth point is totally generalized.

And this whole explanation isn’t TRUE, this is just opinion of some guy/girl who has slightly conception about emotions and emotional persons or he/she is pissed off because something bad happened to him/her about emotions and his/hers emotional state.

Than, I found this web comic called ‘Pon and Zi’ (www.ponandzi.com) created by Jeff Thomas (www.azuzephre.net) and they are ‘emo characters’. Again that e-word :-( and they are amazing, but I’m not so fascinated with them because they are a bit morbid and I don’t like that. Feeling should be something beautiful, not dark and morbid, but there’re a few images which I like:

It’s a bit pathetic, but so true. This is how true lover feel and I like this one so much.
So symbolic, so perfect, just love this one… The message is so clear. I’m so excited when I read this and it touch me so much! Aaaaaaaaaaaaa! And this words are repeated in my mind: “Please don’t break this”. I just can’t explain you how I feel, it’s so amazing feeling, so beautiful. Never mind if you don’t understand me. This image reminds me on myself. This image is just the best explanation of love and trust and what love represents.
It’s bit morbid, but I really feel sometimes like this, searching for love and love never comes or when it comes, that person don’t love me back :-( . My friends always advise me: “It will come when you hope at least”. Perhaps they are right, I’m wishing that they’re right.
I learn Japanese and this is so symbolic for me, because this image remind me a lot about me, because I always write this sentence in my notebook, books etc. in school. It means “I love you” in very formal Japanese and it’s read: “watashi-wa aisuru”…By the way, I always write: “私は(someone)を愛する” :-D
So amazing! So romantic!

And there are a lot of other images at Pon and Zi website. Take a look, because I won’t post every single one of them here.

Thanks a lot for reading,
Vladimir

Zenja, you didn’t get the point of the article. I was talking about people who say “I’m from now on emo” but they don’t have ‘e’ from ‘emotional persons’… I’ll explain you when I see you :-D

emo is a very commercial culture. I don’t understand it myself. It is growing in popularity in the United States but it seems like it is more popular abroad. I think the idea of emo is misconstrued. I think it is seen as a form of gothic in the states and that is why people make fun of it. I personally think it is a commercialized version of gothic culture. You see bands like My Chemical Romance and HIM and they seem very “emo”. I don’t get it and I think another in-depth article would be interesting to read.
